Solomon Grundy by the filmmaker Mattson Tomlin.
The director wanted a minimalistic approach and with a minimal color palette. I based my concepts on what I was told about the story and a 15-minute glimpse of a rough cut to the film. The story focuses on these two men. One of them being an imaginary friend…
I went with a stark and a sort of “flattened” look to the painting/illustration trying to make it more graphic. There are added hints of blues in the top character’s eyes and texture in the poster (you can’t see it very well in such a web preview). The earlier rendering of this concept had the top character’s eyes closed. Below are some of the process.
