April 2012. media: gel pen on paper

While in Berlin back in early April, I took a visit to the Museum für Fotografie where the Helmut Newton Foundation is also located. By chance, the museum was exhibiting Helmut Newton’s Polaroids (unless this is all year round). I was quite excited to see them in person and the many memorabilia of the late photographer. Photographs weren’t allowed inside the galleries, so I made these quick sketches and took notes as I went.

I can reference quite a few artwork in today’s popular culture that can reference back to some of Newton’s Polaroids. It’s amazing how a single man can inspire so many and, I’m sure, indefinitely. I left feeling reinvigorated after the visit.

Multi-tasking between catching up on a TV show (HBO’s “Game of Thrones” here) and concentrating on something entirely different doesn’t work for me. This is what happens. This was quite fun to do. I didn’t linger too long over this, as it’s suppose to be a small sporadic thing and forces me to speed paint. It’s nice way to relieve the artist block I’ve been having lately.

A little quick lustful (and naughty) nod to an evening on Valentine’s Day this past Tuesday night. At least, that’s what I would imagine people [who do "observe"] with a lover or mistress(or) on such an occasion. I romanticized it a bit.

If you had asked me what I was doing on the evening of Valentine’s Day I would’ve answered, “Watch Ryan Gosling in his scorpion nylon jacket bash someone with his hammer in Drive while drawing some strange erotica.” Fitting, yes?
