Priests on Calle Atocha. Madrid, Spain (November 2012) © d. yee, media: acrylic on paper, 11 x 14 in.

original drawing from my travel journal

It was a brisk evening as I was walking along the street of Atocha in Madrid heading to a particular art theater. Up ahead of me, at a quick glance, it looked as if there was a mass of darkness awaiting along my path. Upon a closer approach, the mass forms individual shadows swaying against the evening’s wind. Four priests (sacerdotes Spanish). They were standing outside of a church with their long black cloaks. Seeing a priest (or multiple of them) in person at a public space isn’t something I see often, especially at a late hour of the night. They were standing facing inward at each other as if huddled in for a silent prayer or contemplating Saturday late nightlife. I noted one of them checking his smart phone.
